September and introspection

There is something deeply magical about September. The light changes. The air shifts. And for so many Black women, this in-between season becomes a mirror — a quiet invitation to look inward, to reflect on who we are becoming.

This illustration was born from that feeling. A Black woman, alone with her thoughts, wrapped in the quiet beauty of early autumn. No noise, no performance — just the radical act of being still with herself.

WHY INTROSPECTION MATTERS FOR BLACK WOMEN

In a world that constantly demands our energy, our resilience, and our strength, the act of sitting quietly with our thoughts is almost revolutionary. Black women are so often expected to be strong for everyone else — and rarely given permission to simply be.

September, sitting between the high energy of summer and the deeper introspection of winter, is the perfect time to ask ourselves: Who am I this season? What do I want to release? What am I calling in?

This illustration is a visual reminder that your inner world deserves as much attention and care as everything you give to the outside world.

THE ART OF SELF-REFLECTION

Introspection is not just a feeling — it is a practice. And like any practice, it becomes richer with tools that support it. Many Black women find that journaling, meditation, and intentional routines help them access that quiet inner space where real clarity lives.

If you are looking to build a more intentional self-reflection practice this September, my Wellness Planner was designed exactly for this — with monthly reflection prompts, space for your intentions, and daily check-ins that honour your emotional landscape.

ABOUT THIS ILLUSTRATION

This piece is part of my Black Women Lifestyle illustration collection, where I explore the full emotional range of Black womanhood — joy, rest, contemplation, style, and everything in between. Each illustration is created to celebrate Black women in moments that are rarely shown in mainstream media: quiet moments, private moments, deeply human moments.

The muted tones of this piece — warm ochres, deep browns, soft blues — were chosen deliberately to evoke the melancholy-meets-beauty feeling that September carries so perfectly.
