Dating as a Black woman is a whole genre. And sometimes, the only appropriate response is a comic strip.

Sugar Daddy Comics was born from real conversations, real experiences, and the very specific absurdity of navigating modern relationships as a Black woman who knows her worth — and has a sense of humour about the journey.

THE STORY BEHIND SUGAR DADDY COMICS

The premise is simple: what happens when a fiercely independent, completely self-aware Black woman encounters the particular species known as the ‘sugar daddy’? What follows is funny, sharp, and deeply relatable to any Black woman who has ever had to navigate the complicated intersection of attraction, power, and self-respect.

This comic strip does not shy away from the complexity of these dynamics. It holds space for the humour AND the critique. Because Black women deserve to see their dating lives reflected back with both wit and intelligence.

BLACK WOMEN IN COMICS — WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS

For too long, Black women have been absent from the pages of comic books — or when present, have been reduced to stereotypes. The angry Black woman. The hypersexualised sidekick. The sassy best friend. Never the protagonist of her own story.

This is exactly why creating comics that centre Black women’s perspectives, humour, and inner lives matters so much. When a Black woman reads a comic strip and thinks ‘that is literally my life’ — that recognition is powerful. That is representation doing its real work.

My comic book series was created with this in mind. Every character, every punchline, every situation is written from the inside — by a Black woman, for Black women.

THE ART OF BLACK WOMEN’S HUMOUR

Black women’s humour is its own art form. It is sharp, self-aware, communal, and deeply rooted in a tradition of using laughter to navigate — and survive — difficult realities. From Moms Mabley to Wanda Sykes to the entire canon of Black Twitter, Black women have always been among the funniest and most perceptive voices in culture.

Sugar Daddy Comics tries to honour that tradition — bringing that same energy to the world of illustrated storytelling.

ABOUT THE COMIC BOOK SERIES
