Black Woman Monday Illustration

Monday does not have to be the enemy. For Black women who have embraced the soft life — the intentional, rest-centred, joy-forward way of living — Monday is simply another opportunity to begin again.

This illustration captures that energy. A Black woman, stepping into her week with quiet confidence. Not rushing. Not performing. Just showing up for herself, one intentional morning at a time.

RECLAIMING MONDAY AS A BLACK WOMAN

The hustle culture narrative has been particularly damaging for Black women, who already carry the double burden of racial and gender discrimination in the workplace. ‘Rise and grind’ was never a message designed with us in mind.

The soft life movement — which has resonated deeply within Black women’s communities online and offline — is a direct pushback against this. It is the radical decision to prioritise ease, pleasure, and rest. To build a life that feels good, not just looks productive.

Monday, in a soft life framework, becomes a gentle beginning rather than a stressful sprint.

HOW TO BUILD A SOFT MONDAY MORNING ROUTINE

A soft Monday starts the night before — with a clear intention for the week, a prepared outfit, and a decision about what does NOT go on your plate. In the morning, resist the urge to check your phone first. Instead, try five minutes of silence, a warm drink enjoyed slowly, and one thing that makes you feel good before the day demands anything of you.

My Wellness Planner was designed to support exactly this kind of intentional week-building. With weekly intention pages, daily check-ins, and evening reflection prompts, it helps you design a week that feels aligned rather than overwhelming.

ABOUT THIS ILLUSTRATION

This piece is part of my Soft Life & Wellness illustration series — a collection that celebrates Black women in moments of peace, intention, and self-care. Each illustration is a visual affirmation: you are allowed to take your time, to move gently through your days, to build a life that nourishes you.

The warm morning palette — golden light, soft neutrals, deep skin tones — was chosen to evoke that precious early-morning feeling before the world gets loud.

THE SOFT LIFE AND BLACK WOMEN

The concept of the soft life is not new to Black women — our grandmothers and great-grandmothers always knew the importance of rest as resistance. What is new is the language, and the permission to talk about it openly.

If you want to explore this further, my Complete Soft Life & Wellness Guide goes deep into what the soft life actually means, why it matters for Black women specifically, and how to build one — one Monday at a time.

If this illustration resonates with you and you want to bring more softness, beauty, and representation into your space, you can explore my full collection of art prints celebrating Black women.

Each piece is crafted to honour our stories, our rest, and our joy.
